I think one of the ways music is so influential is through its ability to move us out of a state of complacency.  A few weeks ago we had our annual Member’s Event where we celebrate all that God has done over the past year at Cornerstone, recognize key volunteers and look toward what is still to come. The week preceding the event had been a hard week for me for several reasons and when it came to time to open the event with a short worship set with a couple other musicians I found myself feeling like I had little to give and wishing I was home. But then we began to sing:

When we arrive at eternity’s shore
Where death is just a memory and tears are no more
We’ll enter in as the wedding bells ring
Your bride will come together and we’ll sing
You’re beautiful

And as the song culminated in those lines I found myself quickly delighting in worship as I listened to God’s people sing.  It seems God has uniquely given music the ability draw out our affections, regardless of the state of readiness of our heart.  I love that about music.  We’ve been given this medium that can bypass the resistant state of our hearts to draw directly on our souls the truth of the Gospel.
